Friday 2nd October 2026 Island Zero – A new development proposal for space habitats

50 years ago, the work of Gerard O’Neill resulted in plans for large-scale space habitats that could house upwards of 10,000 people. Such a structure would rotate to produce simulated gravity at 1g or possibly less. Jerry Stone will describe his design called “Island Zero” which will be easier and cheaper to produce than the ISS (International Space Station) and will allow modules to be added nearer the hub for different levels of gravity. Jerry Stone is a Freelance Space Presenter, having spoken on astronomy and space exploration for over 55 years.

He is a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and a Member of Council.
He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and hold positions in several other space organisations.
He is a recognised expert on space exploration, as well as being a broadcaster and author. His work is recognised by NASA.
He met Gerard O’Neill in 1977 and discussed his work.
